Until the early 1990s Roquetas de Mar was little more than a fishing settlement, but today this small port and village of Moorish streets is a up and coming tourist hotspot in Spain's beautiful Almeria region. Visit the beautiful beaches of Roquetas de Mar and discover this hidden treasure on your next trip to Spain.
Roquetas de Mar is a quiet town and tends to attract either young families or older families. It is most popular with German and British tourists. Situated very close to the southeast corner of Spain, Roquetas de Mar is just 160 km east of Malaga. The nearest city is Almeria, 25 km to the west. You can reach Roquetas de Mar easily with a rental car from Almeria Airport.
The area of Roquetas de Mar is mostly flat and backed by the Sierra de Gador mountains, part of the Sierra Nevada range. Due to mountain weather patterns rainfall is very scarce here, making it one of the direst areas in Europe.
In addition to a 3 km beach that is never crowded and full of every imaginable water sport, Roquetas de Mar has an excellent 18-hole golf course, Club de Golf Playa Serena. There are also three other courses nearby: La Envia Golf, Alboran Golf and Golf Almerimar. When the dry heat or sandy beaches are too much you can retreat to the Gran Plaza shopping center for some indoor amusements. In addition to 125 shops they feature a mulit-screen cinema, bowling alley, and an amusement arcade.
