Formentera is a one of the Pine Islands along with its sister island, Ibiza, and it is the most southerly located. Travel to the smallest of the Balearic Islands is easy, and although Formentera doesn't have an airport there are several ways to reach the island. Arrange for ground transportation on the island before your arrival by reserving a Balearic Island car hire online in advance.
Both you and your car hire can take the ferry from either Barcelona or Denia to Ibiza and from there catch another ferry to Formentera.
Though you can't actually fly to Formentera, you can get quite close! Ibiza has an international airport which hosts flights from many major cities, and many flights from the mainland. Reserve an Ibiza rental car to await your arrival at the airport, and bring it along to Formentera on a ferry. Formentera can then be reached by regular ferries from the Estacion Maritima in Ibiza Town, or by tourist ferries from other parts of Ibiza during the high season.
A ferry trip from Ibiza to Formentera takes around half an hour and leaves every half hour in the summer. Trips are inexpensive and you can buy the ticket on the boat, there is no need to reserve. Aside from the standard ferries there is a yellow speedboat ferry which is a little more expensive. It starts from the beach of Platja d'en Bossa near Figueretes.
