Check out Aquitaine Bridge, a unique architectural achievement in France.
In the area called La Victorie you can view a great example of the town's Roman roots; the Victory Arch. If you are interested in some more Roman history, head over to the Musee D'Aquitaine in your Bordeaux car hire. Here you can see Gallo-Roman statues and relics dating back 25,000 years.
Constructed mostly in the 14th and 15th centuries, the Cathedral has a history older and richer than that. Its site dates back to the time of the Romans, and you can still see a wall in the nave of the original Romanesque edifice. The Royal Gate to Saint-André dates from the early thirteenth century and the Cathedral itself was consecrated by Pope Urban II in 1096.
Head over to the area of the old Town Hall in your Bordeaux car hire to see the remnants of the town's medieval walls. Dating back to the 15th century, La Grosse Cloche is the second remaining gate, consisting of two 40m high circular towers and a central bell tower. The bell in the tower weighs an astounding 7,800 kilograms.
There are also several museums to visit throughout the city, convenient with a cheap car rental from Bordeaux airport. Some of the finer museums include Musée des Beaux Arts, Musée d'Aquitaine, CAPC, Vinorama, Casa de Goya, Cap Sciences, and the Centre Jean Moulin.
