The name Madrid probably comes from its ancient Arabic name Mayra (changing later to Mayrit), referring to the river Manzanares as a "giver of life". Madrid-Barajas Airport is the main international airport that serves Madrid, Spain. Located 13 km northeast of Madrid, it is the country's busiest and largest airport. Its name Barajas was designated after the neighbour town of Barajas.

The district of Chueca has also become a hot spot in the city's night party scenes.

We could not talk about Madrid without mentioning one of Spain’s greatest and worldwide known activities, which is bullfighting. Madrid has the largest Plaza de Toros (bullring) in Spain, Las Ventas, born in 1929; and considered the world’s centre of bullfighting.
