Under the reign of Alfonso VIII, the capital became royal residence and, in 1208, the first University in Spain was founded in Palencia.
Palencia is dominated by the sculpture of Cristo del Otero with its 20 metres, watching the city of Palencia from one of the hills surrounding the city. Next to this important highway is plaza Mayor, where the City Hall's facades stand, from the 19th century, and San Francisco's church, and Franciscan precinct from the 13th century.
Next to the Cathedral's temple is the Episcopal Palace, headquarters of the Diocesan Museum, which funds include religious art pieces from different temples in Palencia. Palencia's wide cultural offer is complete with other spots like the Archaeological Museum, Victorio Macho Museum and Díaz-Caneja Foundation, this last one dedicated to contemporary art. Another typical picture of Palencia is Saint Michael's church. Its 13th century tower stands above the Roman construction and to finish off a lancet style.
