Football in Costa Rica

The football game was held in the city of Heredia, and was between the teams from Heredia and Alajuela.  The game was not until 4 in the afternoon, but from the first traffic of the morning the citizens of Heredia were honking their horns in celebratory salute to their team.  For the folks of Heredia, just making it to the final game was a major victory to be proud of; something that hasn't happened for this city in several years.  The streets downtown surrounding the stadium were filled with fans sporting their local colors of yellow and red.  Some painted their faces, others dressed up their dogs, and several had huge yellow and red flags waving from their cars in one way or another.

The stadium in Heredia is quite small, but you can attend football games at a much nicer stadium in Alajuela or San Jose, Costa Rica with a cheap car rental from San Jose Airport.  There was plenty of police control in the streets and around the stadium to make sure everyone stayed safe.  Costa Ricans are typically non-violent and even overly-polite people, but when you have thousands of excited fans crammed into a tiny stadium, and add alcohol to the mix you never know what could happen.
