Yesterday I took a car rental from Mexico City Airport to visit the free and completely magnificent Palacio de Bellas Artes.  The city's free Palace of Fine Arts, the building is huge and covered with dramatic statues and freezes.  Entrance into Bellas Artes is free, if you don't plan to take photos of the paintings inside, and there are several huge artworks to look at once you enter.  An excellent representation of Mexican culture and modern history, this is one stop that should not be missed during your tour of Mexico by car rental.

The Palacio de Bellas Artes is host to many performances and cultural events, and you can find out what will be happening at Bellas Artes during your stay.  There is a nice little gift shop inside with artisan crafts and souvenirs, as well as a fine restaurant, though the prices were a little high so we did not eat there.  Driving around in the area near Bellas Artes can be a little difficult, so it is best to find parking and proceed to the palace and area attractions by foot.  Other highlights in the area include the old restaurant, pictured above, several historical statues, and lots of upscale shopping.
