Huge salt lakes surround the road from Alicante to Torrevieja, making for some fascinating scenery. This area, including Orihuela, has become famous over the years for its salt production, and the huge 'salt mountains' you can see from your Alicante rental car produce more than half a million tons of salt annually. You can enjoy the sights along the way on a day trip from Alicante along the Costa Blanca.
Located just 50 km from Alicante along Spain's national road N32, Torrevieja is a historic harbor town. You can learn about the history of the area at the Museo del mar y sal (Museum of sea and salt) or catch the fishermen on the harbor auctioning fish. Reserve a cheap rental car in Alicante and visit the local harbor attractions.
The name of the town is a compound of two Spanish words, vieja meaning old, and torre meaning tower. The name comes from a popular old tower which once stood on the harbor, and it became a popular name for the destination around 1800 when it took over the salt administration from Orihuela.
Another attraction near the harbor is the Iglesia Arciprestal de la Inmaculada Concepción. The church was originally erected in 1789 and the reconstructed in 1844, using the reclaimed stones from the original Torre Vieja, the old tower from which the city gets its name!
Torrevieja has a variety of pubs and restaurants, both Spanish and European style, to fill your evenings after a full day on the beach.
