Dénia is located halfway between Alicante and Valencia in the province of Alicante. There is evidence that humans have lived in this area since prehistoric times, and Dénia has significant Iberian ruins on its outlying hillsides.
Among its popular sites is Dénia's castle, a stunning picturesque castle topping a rocky crag overlooking the city. It dates back to the 11th and 12th century, and features amazing views around the sea, the city, and the backlands. It provides a perfect place to start your sight-seeing and plot your Alicante car hire course around this little town. The castle houses the Palau del Governador with its museum.
For a fun way to learn more about the culture and history of the city you can visit Dénia's Museo Etnologico.
Dénia is a great place to relax away from the hustle and bustle of some of the bigger cities of Spain, but it is not without its excitement. It is host to a popular bonfire festival every march, when huge paper mache statues, called fallas are set up throughout the town and then set on fire!
Dénia also hosts huge parties during the popular Bous a la Mar (literally "bulls at sea") every July. The highlight of this week long celebration is watching bulls run down the main street Marques de Campo, then be chased into the Mediterranean sea by locals daring enough to enter a makeshift bull ring with them.
