Milan’s most noted piazza is its Piazza Duomo upon which stands the Duomo, Italy’s last great Gothic structure and the fourth largest church in the world. Also located here are the Museo del Duomo and the Civic Museum of Contemporary Art. Just north of it you will find the Golden Quadrilateral, the city’s centre for high fashion.
The old residential quarter called Magenta is the place tovisit if you wish to see the city’s most venerable churches. Other illustrious sights to visit are: the Castello Sforzesco, former abode of two of Milan’s most powerful families the Visconti, who built the castle in the 14th century, and the Sforza, who married into the family and eclipsed their reign. Also, not to miss, is Milan’s oldest church, the Chiesa di San Lorenzo Maggiore, and of course, a visit to Milan is not complete without evidencing some of the works of its master artist, Leonardo da Vinci. Visit the Leonardo da Vinci Museum of Science and Technology to view some working scale models of his inventions on paper.
