The Maldives are formed of giant ring-like coral formations, hundreds of kilometers wide that have fragmented into countless islands. The islands are grouped into atolls, and of the 20 administrative atoll groups only 10 are open to tourism. These are Lhaviyani, Raa, Baa, Kaafu, Alifu, Vaavu, Meemu, Faafu, Daalu, and Seenu. The capital of the islands, the most Maldivian resorts, and the Male airport are located in the Kaafu atoll. Seenu, the southernmost atoll, is where the Gan International Airport is located.
