Contrary to popular belief, Costa Rica's main airport is actually located in the town of Alajuela, about 20 km from San José. The Juan Santamaría International Airport is named after Costa Rica's national hero Juan Santamaría, a courageous drummer boy who died in 1856 defending his country against forces led by US-American filibuster William Walker.
San Jose Airport, as it is commonly called, serves 4.1 million passengers annually, and is the second busiest airport in Central America after Tocumen International Airport in Panama.
There are three other international airports in the country, but only the Jaun Santamaría and Daniel Oduber International Airports host major airlines. Juan Santamaría hosts over 20 different airlines, offering connections to cities through Central America, the US, Canada, and even a few flights to Europe. It works with most US airlines such as Delta, United, American and America West.
For a long time Juan Santamaría International was the only airport in Costa Rica. It was also the first airport in the country to have an asphalt runway, as before this airplanes landing in Costa Rica had to land on runways made of grass. Don't be surprised to find that much of Costa Rica very rural, and you are likely to encounter many rock or dirt roads as you drive around. For this reason it is highly recommended to choose a 4x4 vehicle.
