Target Nurse-In Causes Social Network Stir

Heated debates roar across the social networks Facebook and Twitter in the aftermath of a "Nurse-In" at Target stores throughout the United States.  Foreign travelers in the United States by car rental got to see thousands of moms in more than 250 target locations exercise their right to feed their babies on Wednesday.

In solidarity with a Texas mother, Michelle Hickman, who was treated unfairly by store employees for nursing; then again by the company's customer support, mothers across the nation gathered with their babies and nursed at their local Target Stores.  What in many areas of the world from Latin America to Europe, would appear as a totally normal way to keep a baby happy while shopping; appears to many U.S. citizens as disgusting or disgraceful exposure.

All that would be find and dandy, and Wednesday's Nurse-In would have passed without even holding up your rental car in traffic if certain high profile people had kept their negative opinions to them selves, or perhaps not walked into a Target Store.  Tempers and tensions rose when NASCAR Driver Kasey Kahne tweeted badly about boobies, but balance was found when Healthful Mama pointed out the similarities between NASCAR and Breastfeeding. 

If you happen to be traveling with your young family or will be a nursing mother yourself during your next trip to the United States by car rental it may be important to note that breastfeeding in public is controversial.  The majority of states have laws in place that protect a mother's right to breastfeed anywhere she would otherwise be legally permitted, without stipulating how covered the breast or baby's face should be.  However, it is not the laws that are the problem but ignorance of the law along with social taboo.
