Places to visit in Figueras
To the outskirts of Figueras, dominating the city from upon a hill is Sant Ferran’s castle, a fortress built in the 18th century. Its colossal dimensions, and more than 3 kilometre perimeter, make it one of the largest in Europe. The historical quarter of Figueras is limited by traces of its old wall, raised during the Middle Ages to protect the village. La Rambla is the main tour site and authentic axis in the city of Figueras. This very live commercial route concentrates the most ambitious architectural projects from the 19th and 20th centuries, boosted specially by the pushing local bourgeoisie in those times. In reference to religious architecture, church Sant Pere deserves a special mention. Originally built in a Roman style, this temple was rebuilt in the 14th century under gothic canons. Afterwards, some elements were added such as the cruise and the apse, both in the 18th century. Other interesting buildings in Figueras include Sant Sebastian's chapel, of medieval style and remodelled at the beginnings of the 17th century, and the convent of Caputxins, a complex built in the 18th century.
