A Festival of Sharing in Mexico

With the growing awareness of global financial problems and attention on protests like the Occupy movement, more and more solutions are pointing to local economy and building more self-reliant local communities.  Perhaps more cities around the world should adopt a festival focused on the commitment to sharing like the Guelaguetza in Oaxaca.  Every year community members come together and trade their skills and crafts for promises of exchange, which may not be cashed in for potentially years down the road.  Beautiful.

The Guelaguetza festival also honors the goddess of corn, Centeotl.  This tradition brings forth traditional dances from each of the seven regions, each with their own characteristics and regional dress, to thank the goddess for her bounty.  As if the beautiful dances weren't gift enough, the spirit of sharing goes even further as gifts are tossed out to the audience during the dances.
