Galdar in Gran Canaria

Along the coast of Gran Canaria, to the south there’s the beautiful town of Galdar. Its name comes from the Guanche word “Agaldar”, which means royal city, because it was once the heart of the Guanche civilization, and this is why it has important archaeological settlements. After conquer Galdar was founded in 1484, and it was home to Tenesor Semidan, one of the two Guanche leaders of the island.

This quarter is very proud of their Guance origins, and this is why you’ll find many streets named with words that represent those times. Galdar was, in fact, capital of the island at some point, before the place was given to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
