City tour from Hamburg
Take about three days to visit Harz, in a Hamburg rental car, and take a city as a base, for example Wernigerode, and from here you can start making daily tours to the other, since they are very well connected.
You can stay in a nice hotel or a simple B&B which are a lot cheaper. Hamburg is really worth the try. You'll realize these German cities have a lot to offer and their culture and people will amaze you around every corner.
And of course, no question about it, Germany's architecture will leave you speechless. I loved the view of the Wernigerode Castlle during winter.
