Scariest Roads by Car Hire

Today is Halloween and in honor of this frightful holiday I bring you the scariest roads you can drive by car rental.  Spooky, dizzying, and climbing up dramatic landscapes, the roads I've chosen are viable options for those traveling by car rental and exclude some roads which might be considered scarier but have a significant aspect of danger that wouldn't make for a very good vacation.  For a more inclusive list check out Travel and Leisure's list of the World's Scariest Roads.

Troll Ladder, Norway

Enjoy a blood-curdling ride up the Fjord in Norway by car rental.  Called the Trollstigen, which translates to "Troll Ladder" the road consists of a complicated set of hairpin turns with little to no margin for error, though it is not lacking in safety standards.  It is immensely popular with adventure tourists for the stunning scenery which includes a breathtaking view of waterfalls, and the top includes a viewing balcony which overlooks the road so you can bask in the sight of the road you just conquered.

Col de Turini, France

Reserve a car rental in France to test your skills (or scare yourself silly) on the road Top Gear proclaimed as "one of the greatest driving roads in the world".  Climbing to a dizzying 1607 meters along a series of challenging hairpins, the Col de Turini takes you through the French Alps and combines the stunning scenery of mountains, gorge, and river.  Add the Col de Turini to your list of activities on this year's winter ski trip in France.

Independence Pass, Colorado

Another twisty road that is sure to be hair-raising, the stretch of Colorado highway from Aspen to Leadville is known as one of the scariest routes in the USA.  It includes the world's highest suspension bridge, the Royal Gorge Bridge, which is strung up in 1929 at 1,053 feet above the Arkansas River.
