A Self-Driving Car Hire?

The answer to this question may soon be yes.  Take a look at this short video from the inside of one of Google's Auto-driving cars.  Car rental might be an entirely different experience in the not too distant future.  Could you imagine picking up your own car hire in some place with a lot of traffic like London Heathrow Airport, and never having to take on the stress of actually driving the car.

While that scenario may be a while yet into the future, this test performance at the TED 2011 conference  shows a very promising display of driver-less technology.  If the driving here seems erratic its not because the program functions poorly, but because this run is pushing the car to test its capabilities; racing to high speeds, making hairpin turns, and other actions you wouldn't do during normal driving.

While there are a few car rental companies that offer chauffeur services, such as London based AMC, hiring a driver doesn't even compare to the experience you could have on vacation in an auto-driven car hire.  Will they reduce accidents during holidays?  Save lives and cut down on drunk driving?  Or simply provide more quality time in the 7 seater car hire?
